Mastering the Wheel: 9-Week Advanced Course

Mastering the Wheel: 9-Week Advanced Course

This 9-week course is tailored for potters who already have a foundation on the wheel — you can center confidently, pull up clay with control, and have some trimming experience.
Throughout the course you will:
• Master larger forms — learn to handle more clay and create tall, wide pieces with strength and control.
• Explore complex vessels — work on advanced projects such as moon jars and teapots, developing precision in shaping, joining, and refining.
• Refine your techniques — improve trimming, proportions, and finishing details to take your work to the next level. This is the perfect next step if you’re ready to expand your wheel-throwing vocabulary and push the limits of what you can create.

Course Outline

• Week 1: Throwing
Learn to centre bigger amount of clay – (2 kg-4 kg), focusing on moon jar shape. Master control of medium- to large-scale forms, focusing on skills that can achieve balance and uniformity when shaping.

• Week 2: Trimming
Learn precise trimming skills to enhance proportions and refine clean lines.

• Week 3: Throwing

Learn how to create functional lidded jars while developing the precision needed to make well-fitting lids. This class will also step into throwing off the hump, a technique that allows you to efficiently create multiple small forms from a single piece of clay, improving both your speed and consistency on the wheel

• Week 4: Trimming
Develop surface refinement and detail finishing for elegance and texture.

• Week 5: Throwing
Practice challenging tea-pot forms and learn to refine throwing skills by getting spout done with a proper angle and good water flow, and by creating an accurate lid size and lid gallery (where the lid sits).

• Week 6: Trimming
Work on teapot construction. Refine curves for a smooth flowing silhouette. Work on spout and handle attachment.

• Week 7: Throwing
Create sets of works, focusing on maintaining uniformity in series production (e.g. tea cups). Practice skills for all vessel shapes that were taught during the course. Individual guidance will be given depending on personal needs.

• Week 8: Trimming
Conduct final adjustments and prepare pieces for glazing.

• Week 9: Glazing
Learn glazing techniques, color coordination, and finishing to complete a unique ceramic collection.
